Intel IT implemented a secure, managed solution that allows employees to use their wireless handheld devices on the corporate network.
Overview
In response to employees' increasing wireless mobility needs, Intel IT implemented a managed mobility solution for employees to connect their wireless handheld devices as trusted devices on the corporate network. These devices include personal digital assistants (PDAs), wireless phones, smart phones, and palmtops.
Although wireless handheld devices provide great opportunities for improving employee productivity, they also introduce the potential for new threats to intellectual property and the corporate IT network if not implemented and managed properly.
Any solution to enable wireless handheld devices to connect to a corporate network needed to not only be secure in order to protect company assets, but also quick and easy for users to set-up.
Intel’s secure solutions for handheld devices offer many benefits:
- Standard network and wireless protocols
- Readily available industry-standard components
- Quick and easy logon procedures
- Connection options that address different mobility needs based on location
- Connectivity anywhere within the global Intel corporate network
Intel’s solutions serve employees who need wireless mobility on handheld devices for both office productivity tools and line of business applications. They also meet the stringent and ever increasing needs of our IT organization to secure and manage wireless handheld devices.

Effective Conference Wi-Fi
In order to successfully deploy reliable wireless LANs for employees attending our offsite conferences and events, Intel IT developed guidelines for working with wireless Internet service providers and then measured the benefits.
By offering wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), the 802.11 wireless LAN standard, Intel was able to reduce support costs and increase productivity - the result provided a fast, stable, and reliable wireless network allowing our employees to connect virtually anywhere at a given event.
Designing and managing an enterprise-grade wireless LAN installation comes with significant challenges. Intel IT carefully planned, using wireless network monitoring tools and post-event user surveys to continually improve Wi-Fi coverage.
Intel IT created a refined process to implement reliable, cost-effective Wi-Fi for all attendees including:
- Choosing the right implementation partners, whether it be the event location, a local wireless Internet service provider, a larger national provider, or a combination
- Determining in advance all foreseeable Wi-Fi issues and security concerns
- Studying data from current and previous conferences, collected by network monitoring tools in order to continuously refine the process
- Observing and interviewing attendees to track use patterns and issues
Wireless mobility plays a critical role in enabling employee productivity. Intel IT plans to incorporate new technologies into what they've learned about wireless LAN installations at conference venues to continue adding value to Intel events.
