Wal-Mart Sticking to Its RFID Guns

The supply-chain applications are still young, and a lot of companies successfully using the technology are reluctant to fully document their return on investment. "You can imagine that it is a competitive advantage and if you're an early adopter, why would you share the dollars-and-cents ROI?" Julie England, general manager of the RFID systems group at Texas Instruments, said.

Hitachi Creates Paper-Thin RFID Tags

Hitachi has unveiled a radio frequency identification chip that it claims is the world's smallest, at just 0.002 inches by 0.002 inches. Though the accomplishment is a "sign of innovation in the market," according to Michael Liard, research director of RFID at ABI Research, "we are still several years away from having any practical business solutions realized."

Mobile Technology shorts:
1) 25% of young Americans do not have a landline
The portion of adults with only cellphones grew by more than 2% in the latter half of in 2006 to nearly 12%. 25% of Americans 18 to 24 had only cellphones, as did 29% of those aged 25 to 29. 15% of Hispanic adults, 13% of black adults, 12% of Asians and 11% of whites had only cellphones. 22% of the poorest adults had only cellphones, double the rate for those who are not poor. 13% of males and 11% of females had cellphones only. Nearly 2% of adults had no phone at all, CDC reports.


2) Mobile video generated $200 mln in 2006
Service provider revenue from mobile video services jumped 317% to almost $200 mln worldwide from 2005 to 2006, and is expected to triple in 2007, says Infonetics Research. The number of worldwide mobile video subscribers increased more than 300% between 2005 and 2006, and is set to soar to over 46 mln by 2010. Asia Pacific will be the regional stronghold of mobile video subscribers through at least 2010, with 57% of the world total in 2006, followed by EMEA at 31%, North America at 10%, and CALA at 3%.


3) Mobile marketing and ads to reach $3 bln in 2007
The world market for mobile marketing and advertising is expected to be worth about $3 bln by the end of 2007, according to ABI Research. By 2011, the value of this market will reach $19 bln, including mobile search and video advertising. ABI Research also expects some of the highest levels of spending to come in the broadcast mobile video space. By 2011, it will surpass SMS as a source of mobile marketing spending, due in part to mobile broadcast networks’ presence in all major markets. In 2011, ABI Research expects spending for broadcast mobile video advertising alone to reach $9 bln.
